The future of red meat

The UK's Red Meat Industry Forum has outlined what it sees as the future of the red meat industry. In a rather unusual exercise, a panel of marketing experts, including advertising agency planning directors and professional market trend commentators, were asked to give their views on the trends most likely to affect red meat consumption over the next 10 years.

Following on from this, a seminar of senior marketing personnel from food companies was held to look at the future of the UK food market in the next 10 years involving a round-table discussion of the key trends.

The Meat and Livestock Commission (MLC)'s considerable market research sources and databases were also put into the equation to pull out some key trends which can be extrapolated into the future. The end result will be a video to be seen at the RMIF Conference at the QE II Centre in London on Thursday, 6 November 2003.

"Interpreting consumer trends is an inexact science but we hope to stimulate thinking about trends in food consumption and how they might impact on the red meat industry," said MLC marketing director Richard Lowe, who has been masterminding the video.

The Red Meat Industry Forum was launched in 2001 with the aim of improving performance and profitability in the livestock and meat industry. It concentrates on improving the efficiency of the supply chain through cutting costs in the production and processing sectors and communicating customer needs.
